- Smart Prosthetics: Exploring Assistive Devices for the Body and Mind: Task Group Summaries
The 2006 conference, aEUROoeSmart Prosthetics: Exploring Assistive Devices for the Body and Mind,aEURO attracted scientists, engineers and medical researchers to participate in a series of task groups to develop research plans to address various challenges within the prosthetics field. Eleven conference task groups gave the participants eight hours to develop new research approaches to various challenges, including: build a smart prosthesis that will grow with a child; develop a smart prosthetic that can learn better and/or faster; refine technologies to create active orthotic devices; and describe a framework for replacing damaged cortical tissue and fostering circuit integration to restore neurological function. Representatives from public and private funding organizations, government, industry, and the science media also participated in the task groups. This book provides a summary of the conference task groups. For more information about the conference, visit the Smart Prosthetics conference site. The National Academies Keck Futures Initiative was launched in 2003 to stimulate new modes of scientific inquiry and break down the conceptual and institutional barriers to interdisciplinary research. The National Academies and the W.M. Keck Foundation believe considerable scientific progress and social benefit will be achieved by providing a counterbalance to the tendency to isolate research within academic fields. The Futures Initiative is designed to enable researchers from different disciplines to focus on new questions upon which they can base entirely new research, and to encourage better communication between scientists as well as between the scientific community and the public. Funded by a $40 million grant from the W.M. Keck Foundation, the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative is a 15-year effort to catalyze interdisciplinary inquiry and to enhance communication among researchers, funding agencies, universities, and the general public with the object of stimulating interdisciplinary research at the most exciting frontiers. The Futures Initiative builds on three pillars of vital and sustained research: interdisciplinary encounters that counterbalance specialization and isolation; the identification and exploration of new research topics; and communication that bridges languages, cultures, habits of thought, and institutions. Toward these goals, the National Academies Keck Futures Initiative incorporates three core activities each year: Futures conferences, Futures grants, and National Academies Communication Awards. - Loving Him Well: Practical Advice on Influencing Your Husband
The bestselling author of Sacred Marriage returns to show wives how to revolutionize their marriage through helping, inspiring, and influencing their husbands.
Women: you're not alone in your marriage. You never have been, and you never will be. While it may not always feel like it, God wants you to have a relationally healthy, emotionally engaged, and spiritually mature husband.
In Loving Him Well - previously titled Sacred Influence - Gary Thomas builds on concepts from his bestselling book Sacred Marriage to reveal the inner workings of a man's heart and mind. He delves into Scriptures that help women gain biblical insight to influence their husbands. Exploring the research of neuroscientists, trained counselors, and abuse victim advocates, Gary also interviews dozens of wives to find what has worked and what hasn't as they've sought to build the best marriage possible.
With new stories and fresh illustrations to help wives understand, love, and influence their husbands, Loving Him Well offers encouragement, biblically based support, and practical applications for the transformation of your marriage, drawing you and your husband closer together, the way God intended.
Thomas desires to "encourage women who are in good marriages that could get even better; and offer hope and a new path forward to women who feel invisible or marginalized in their marriage." You'll discover the influence you can gain and the peace of mind you can build when you go first to God for your worth, validation, protection, and provision and then learn how to use that platform to help your husband draw closer to you and closer to God.
Loving Him Well includes study questions at the end of each chapter and is also available in Spanish, Amandolo bien.
- Review of Wic Food Packages: Proposed Framework for Revisions: Interim Report
The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) began 40 years ago as a pilot program and has since grown to serve over 8 million pregnant women, and mothers of and their infants and young children. Today the program serves more than a quarter of the pregnant women and half of the infants in the United States, at an annual cost of about $6.2 billion. Through its contribution to the nutritional needs of pregnant, breastfeeding, and post-partum women; infants; and children under 5 years of age; this federally supported nutrition assistance program is integral to meeting national nutrition policy goals for a significant portion of the U.S. population.
To assure the continued success of the WIC, Congress mandated that the Food and Nutrition Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reevaluate the program's food packages every 10 years. In 2014, the USDA asked the Institute of Medicine to undertake this reevaluation to ensure continued alignment with the goals of the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. This, the second report of this series, provides a summary of the work of phase I of the study, and serves as the analytical underpinning for phase II in which the committee will report its final conclusions and recommendations.

- Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation
The percentage of overweight and obese adults and children continues to grow. The causes of obesity are multi-factorial, including everything from cultural norms to the availability of affordable foods. The broad societal changes that are needed to prevent obesity will inevitably affect eating and activity environments and settings for all ages. Many aspects of the obesity problem have been identified and discussed; however, there is not complete agreement on what needs to be done or how to make all of the current efforts work together. Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention reviews previous studies and their recommendations and presents key recommendations to accelerate meaningful change on a societal level during the next decade. The book suggests five recommendations that will independently accelerate obesity prevention, although the report offers that the simultaneous implementation of these recommendations will also lead to the acceleration of obesity prevention. The Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention recommendations include the implementation of consistent nutrition education policies, and ensuring food literacy and physical education in schools. The key audiences for the recommendations are public policy makers, private-sector decision makers, and leaders in institutions such as foundations, health agencies, and professional and community-based organisations.
